The Only Things Still Standing
The last small red fire goes out thousands of ages of the universe from now — rounded down, and said in pencil, because nobody can time a fire not yet lit. After it, not nothing: dark is not empty, and the sky keeps its furniture long after it loses its lights. Five kinds stay standing — the embers of dead stars, the city-sized remnants, the black holes, the failed stars that never lit and the dark worlds — and every one of the five exists tonight and has been photographed, heard, timed, counted or caught drifting, so what is left is ink even though when is pencil. Well over nine in every ten stars end as embers, rounded down. Then the longest clock this show has ever set: hundreds of millions of ages at the least before an island of stars comes apart, not by exploding but by near misses, star shoving star until most of its pieces are flung out into the dark between the islands and a tenth at most falls inward to the black hole that ate the centre, leaving a cold scattered drift and one black hole. Both assumptions behind that clock are named on screen. The long dark of Season 3 is held beside this one and the difference is said out loud: that dark was full of gas gathering toward a dawn, this one has nothing left to gather. Everything that will still be standing then is standing already, tonight, most of it inside stars that are still lit.
